− | Characterization is the process of site-specific activities carried out to establish baseline conditions at a site. The process seeks to answer questions about the nature of the site, and the sources, extent, and type of contaminants that exist in and around it. Standard practice is to evaluate the sites hydrogeology and ecology, as well as the history and consequences of human activity at the site. The goal is to identify potential and possibly future risks to the environment and human health that provides the context for developing a remediation plan. Articles listed below provide information that is particularly relevant to environmental site characterization.
